How to Prevent Cavities and Keep Teeth and Gums Healthy

We get cavities most of the time as a result of what we eat. Cavities are extremely common in children, and with good cause. They frequently consume cookies, candies, carbonated beverages, and other sticky foods. To make matters worse, they frequently get out of bed and play without brushing their teeth. These sweets stick to tooth surfaces and become lodged between teeth, causing a little dark spot to form on a tooth.

The most effective strategy for adults and children to avoid cavities is to consume a nutritious diet. Apples, as well as all other crisp fruits and vegetables, increase saliva production, which helps to wash away food particles. Fresh fruits and veggies supply essential nutrients while also providing a good snack for our teeth to maintain them fresh and feeling clean. Strawberries have a naturally occurring chemical that helps to whiten teeth.

Any sugar we eat is rapidly converted by bacteria in our mouths into an acid that eats away at tooth enamel. Obesity and tooth decay are both caused by a constant diet of sugary and high carb foods. Gum disease is triggered by cavities. Some of the hazards can be avoided by simply rinsing your mouth after eating meals like these. Brushing after every meal is, of course, essential for healthy teeth and gums.

For healthy teeth and gums, see the dentist every six months for regular cleanings. Remember that your teeth will have to last you throughout your lifetime and people are now living to be 90 years old so that’s a lot of wear and tear on your teeth.
